Rural Miyani-Pesa launched in Kenya
After introducing the successful urban Bangla-Pesa in Mombasa, STRO partner Grassroots Economic launched their first rural community currency in Kenya on the 18th of August 2017. This rural community currency is backed by the inventory of the local mill cooperative and other local partners in the project. The factory mills local maize and issues vouchers for its flour.
The project aims to create a means of exchange, or “vouchers” that facilitate economic activity within the rural community, but also to reward people for undertaking environmental services, such as planting trees or promoting water conservation.
